Today, I beat Jajamaru no Daiboken... another Jajamaru game already? Well let's face it, he's not gonna show up in Nintendo Power and I kind of got a taste for it after playing the first game for a bit.
As I said, Jajamaru games tend to look at what's popular at the time and style the games after that. What game was popuar the year before 1986? Why, Super Mario Bros. of course. Jajamaru went from a single screen game with elements of Mario Bros, popeye, and ice climber, to a side scrolling platformer in which he finds power-ups inside special blocks... though to be fair, the power ups inside breakable platforms was in the first game, but it's much more mario style now, in the first game they were platforms of varying size you could break, but now they're just blocks.
Anyway, this game isn't nearly as refined as Mario, jajamaru is slow and floaty, power-ups are truly random as opposed to mario's pre-determined power-ups. Playing quick is a bad idea as some breakable blocks do have bombs inside that can kill you, so avoid the instinct to jump right up after breaking a block... like the first game, enemies can't kill you simply by touching you, it has to launch a projectile at you, but their projectiles are fast and fire off with little warning, which can really get irritating. There's also no telegraphing when they're about to fire. I think you're meant to be able to stun the enemies by stomping them like in the last game, but it seems to be bugged, you have to be obnoxiously precise or it just registers as the monster bumping into you... in fact, most of the times monsters got stunned was when they tried to jump up to me from below and their head contacted my feet, it was rarely me doing it intentionally with a jump.
The game seems to end around stage 10 given you defeat the baddie from the first game and rescue the princess, but no, you keep going through new levels with new baddies and remixed versions of old stages, you defeat all the bosses again except now there's two of each, and except for the final boss for some reason even though he would clone himself in the original game. But once you rescue princess Sakura a 2nd time, the game seems to loop back around to the first level, but without any changes... so yeah, I assume I just "beat" the game.
I like Jajamaru, I find the series kind of endearing, but I'm not going to lie, I can't recommend these games to the average player or even seasoned NES enthusiasts who are used to a little jank. You have to be a total platform junkie that wants to play all the platformers even if they're not very good for me to reccomend Jajamaru no Daiboken. The first one was an okay score chase game, but this one seems like an acquired taste. There's three more Jajamaru games on the NES, and while I can't say anything on the next two, but the final one shows a lot of promise.
EDIT: Note to self, read a little bit of strategy wiki before I start playing a new game if it's available. I found out you can jump down through some platforms and that would have been helpful info to have, and also the power up system makes a little more sense now.
